Garnett's first body of work is painted junior and senior year at St. Lawrence University, independent of the painting department. The Neo-Pop paintings are inspired initially by Warhol yet quickly Garnett falls under the spell of Chuck Close by focusing on the formal possibilities of blowing faces off the canvas beyond recognition. Abstracting faces into linear patterns recalls Garnett's early fascination with mazes and foreshadows The Fingerprint Project, where the artist further abstracts identity in a continuing series of paintings and sculptures The New York Times declares 'cutting edge art' in 2001.
