NEW LANDS: LANDSCAPES ON THE MIND

Curated by Sandy Garnett

The landscape is one of the most tried and true types of paintings, and it's especially familiar to Fairfield County where it seems every coastal town has been rendered by an artist taking who took refuge there. (Theodore Robinson's impressionistic images of turn-of-the-century Greenwich show a place that looked more like Paris than Beverly Hills.) For Landscapes on the Mind, curator Sandy Garnett surveyed the landscape work of local artists of several styles. The exhibit is expectantly coastal but the way Norwalk's Garnett serves up an ultra-realist, clear-day-at-the-beach scene of idyllic lighthouses while Judith Lambertson, also a Norwalker, shows a similar subject (pictured) with cotton-candy hues and impressionist swirls reminds viewers of the diversity and appeal of scene-centered paintings. Loft Artists Association Gallery, 845 Canal St., Stamford. Noon to 5 p.m. Fris.-Suns. (except May 11) through June 1. Free. (203) 323-4153, www.loftartists.com. FAIRFIELD COUNTY WEEKLY
